Missing in Action: Belgian Civilians and the First World War.

Belgium occupies an uneasy place in scholarship of the World War I. As a neutral nation with both an army in the field and an occupied population, Belgium fits well in neither the histories of battle nor of home fronts. A re-examination of Belgium's varied war experiences could open up a new series of questions regarding the '14-'18 conflict.
