Constructing the illusion of freedom : architecture and psychiatry in nineteenth-century Belgium

Constructing the Illusion of Freedom: Architecture and Psychiatry in Nineteenth-century Belgium - Abstract

The rise of nineteenth-century asylum ther- apy encouraged Belgian physicians to rede- sign care for the insane. Architecture played a crucial role in the reform of Belgian psychia- try. Nineteenth-century psychiatrists empha- sized the curative aspect of confinement in a well-designed asylum. Though the isola- tion of the mentally ill was believed to cata- lyze the patient’s recovery process, the act of sequestration was concealed as much as pos- sible. Asylum architecture aimed to re-create a homelike situation in the asylum, following the example of the Guislain hospice in Ghent. In the period leading up to the reform, other therapeutic practices — such as family treatment in Gheel — were heavily discredited. Family care in Gheel was reorganized in the second half of the nineteenth century by a process in which a restructuring of the built environ- ment proved a useful tool. The introduction of a small-scale institution in the form of an ‘infirmary’ and the rearrangement of the spatial organization of the village remodeled Gheel’s colony and made it possible to provide a treat- ment which better matched asylum therapy.
