The political economist Emile de Laveleye was actively involved in a carefully orchestrated European media campaign in support of the colonial policy of King Leopold II in Congo. This paper discusses de Laveleye's ideas about expansionism and colonisation, and shows how his contacts in the world of law contributed to discussions about Congo's juridical status.

De Engelstalige historiografie over de Afrikaanse veldtochten van de Eerste Wereldoorlog gaat ervan uit dat de Belgisch-Congolese troepen militair niet in staat waren een offensief tegen Duits Oost-Afrika te beginnen. Belgium's Mid-Twentieth Century Crisis: Crisis of a Nation-State
This article examines the crisis of the Belgian nation-state during the latter twentieth century, by exploring the ways in which the upheavals of the 1930s and 1940s contributed to the subsequent problems of Belgium as a political community. It emphasises how the short-term refounding of the state after the liberation exacerbated longer-term political and social tensions.
From Class to Culture
This article contends that class politics has receded in advanced capitalist societies during the last century, while cultural politics has increased, and it focuses on social and political institutions, rather than on occupational structure, to explain the shift. Participation in solidary groups is key to the social bases of politics, and the political salience of such groups is affected by social institutions that are independent of the occupational structure. Whereas indirect rule tends to promote class politics, direct rule favors cultural politics.
