The flexible character of capitalism is attributable in the first place to a chance built-in mutation mechanism of the executive groups. Renewed executive groups adapt themselves to the contemporary circumstances more easily than a hereditary class, thus protecting the system from an undermining of its power.

The popular mass had to contend with continuous price increases whereas wages remained stationary or even decreased. Without support the Bruges working-class families could not possibly make both ends meet. A t Bruges, this support was remarkably well organized, but eventually proved insufficient.

Although historians have attributed engines of this kind in the Borinage to engineers from Liège or Namur, no proof of this has been forthcoming in order to verify the origin of several such engineers and their social background.
